Abstract

Anxiety is a common psychological problem experienced by patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus due to the burden of managing a chronic illness. This condition may affect patients’ adherence to treatment and blood glucose control. This study aimed to analyze the differences in anxiety levels before and after the administration of a combination of guided imagery therapy and natural sound instrumental music among patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus at Prima Husada Sukorejo Hospital. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest–posttest control group approach. The sample consisted of 112 patients selected using purposive sampling and divided into two groups: an intervention group (56 respondents) and a control group (56 respondents). The intervention was administered for 30 minutes per session for three consecutive days. Anxiety levels were measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the Mann-Whitney test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that there was no significant change in the control group (p = 0.083), whereas the intervention group showed a significant decrease in anxiety levels (p = 0.000). The Mann-Whitney test also indicated a significant difference between the intervention and control groups after the intervention (p = 0.000). The combination of guided imagery therapy and natural sound instrumental music is effective in reducing anxiety levels among patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
